Sky on fire

The northern lights are shifted very south right now due to a large solar storm that is impinging on our upper atmosphere.  Nothing like the view from Alaska or north Canada, but still a great occasion to see a rare event.  Here’s the best single image I got.

That’s not too bad for being thousands of miles from the North Pole.

Did you see the lights?

    • Mike, sorry the storm didn’t push the lights far enough south. Some of the press releases were a little hyperbolic. One said the lights would be overhead in Chicago and visible in Dallas. They were low on the horizon just north of Milwaukee so those places never had a chance! I was again amazed at the difference in perception between our eyes and digital sensors. The ability to keep absorbing light is really an advantage photography has over just glancing around.
