If you’re driving west of Madison, WI be sure to get off the main highway and pass through Mt. Horab, situated on the trollway.
Digging deeper into the website you learn the town created the concept of a trollway after carved trolls became an attraction, and the highway department put in a bypass around the town. What was a friendly sight along the main street became a major marketing effort.
As you see, the carvings lend themselves to photography, especially B&W. I liked the tones in this image as well as the textures of the wood and flowers.
As Charles Kuralt once said, the interstate highway system is a great way to get across the country without seeing a single interesting thing. Get off that track and investigate the side roads. You could find a place like Mt. Horab!
